MOH 3 Overview and Quarter 1

This year we are using The Mystery of History 3 by Linda Hobar. ( see change of plans below)  We highly recommend this curriculum!  Go here for more information on the curriculum and the author. http://www.themysteryofhistory.com/  The information below are web sites, books, movies, and other information we have gathered to go with Linda's curriculum.  Linda's curriculum can be read just as it is with no further investigation or research. However we have high schoolers and we like them to test the curriculum and go deeper. We also allow for bunny trails in areas of great interest. As the year progresses we will post photos of completed projects.

Resources

Books We Are Reading:

If you do not want your children exposed to nude figures please preview and read the books with your children. Nudity in art was the norm during this period.

The Renaissance Travel Guide Anna Claybourne

My daughter loves this simple book.  It is of everyday life, what to see and do , transportation, crime and punishment, all set in the Renaissance time period as if you were actually traveling during that time. There is a great timeline and who's who of the renaissance guide.

Geography

We are using an Instructional Fair Reproducible activity workbook for U.S. and World Map Skills.

This book is great as a review or as a whole course in basic U.S and World Geography. I generally do not do workbooks however this will serve as a review for one child and new learning for another. They will work together and do more than just the workbook. For each location we will find photos, discuss culture, religion ect.

We will also be using  Geography Bowl Quiz Team Book by Abeka. Great for games.

180 Inventors and their Inventions

Dates for inventions are often controversial because inventions are often invented by several inventors around the same time, or may be invented in an impractical form many years before another inventor improves the invention into a practical form. I have tried to put the first date the invention was put into use here.

Assignment:

Using an index card:

Put date of invention in upper right hand corner

Put name of inventor in upper left hand corner

Put name of invention in the middle of the first line

Write a brief description of the invention and how it is used. If possible put a picture of the invention on the back of your card.

Civil War

Note: There is so much information on the Civil War and so many directions you can take with it. It is best in small bites! Take time to limit your topic before you begin. One year we did just Matthew Brady. Another we focused on the Causes and Effect. Other areas: Medicine, Women of the War, Lincoln, Abolitionist,Weapons, Music, Food, Social Life, Forts and Battlefields, Key People of the War, spies. ( and more!)

We are ending our year with the Civil War. The gals will be reading several books and just reviewing the timeline of the war. Living here in the south we have been to many Civil War sites and done so much on the civil war. Our most recent field trip was to Appomattox.

  • Books  ( that we are reading)

The Dred Scott Decision by Brendan January

The Story of the Underground Railroad by R Conrad Stein

The Surrender at Appomattox Court House by Zachary Kent

The Gettysburg Address by Kenneth Richards

Fords Theater and the Death of Lincoln by Zachary Kent

We will be reading portions of

The Underground Railroad by William Still

This is a selection of reports from actual slaves.

Homestead Act

The Homestead act was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862. It encouraged folks to move west by providing settlers 160 acres of public land. In exchange, homesteaders had to  paid a small filing fee and had to live on the land for five years of continuous residence before receiving ownership of the land. After six months of living on the land homesteaders could purchase the land from the government for $1.25 per acre. The Homestead Act led to the distribution of 80 million acres of public land by 1900.
